Sparkling wine sales are holding up well, despite the current economic outlook, although the higher end is showing signs of slowing down. Sparkling wines are now a part of our everyday lifestyles as opposed to being reserved for special occasions only, so expect to see more innovation in terms of packaging and a greater push towards quality over quantity.
Most sparkling wines fall under two different categories; those that go through their second fermentation in bulk in tank (known as the Charmat method) and those that go through it in the bottle (known as Traditional Method). Prosecco is the best example of the former and Champagne for the latter but there are many other examples of both, especially Traditional Method.
Prosecco is still the volume driver, thanks partly to the re-introduction of Prosecco Rosé but mainly due to its price accessibility and lighter, foamy, fruity, off-dry style. At least at DOC level anyway. We have a broad selection including rosé, single serve and an organic example too in Ceradello Prosecco.
In line with the overall premiumisation trend, interest in higher quality, drier DOCG Proseccos is growing, especially in fine dining establishments, and more focus should be made here if these drinkers are to be retained rather than lost to craft beer and gin.
Cava has had a bit of a shake-up in the last year or two thanks to some helpful changes to production rules. These have been implemented to raise the overall quality and to push for universal organic status at the highest quality levels.
Another prime example of bottle-fermented fizz, Cava is predominantly made from native grape varieties, and offers a strong quality value ratio. We have four examples of which two are certified organic, one from Bodegas Sumarroca and another from Vilarnau.
Crémant is another French traditional method sparkler that’s been gaining a lot of interest over the past few years, as it offers a stepping stone between Prosecco and Champagne in terms of price and quality. We carry an organic Crémant d’Alsace from Cave de Turckheim and a Crémant de Limoux from Maison Antech, both of which are excellent.
English fizz continues to go from strength to strength and is the biggest competition to Champagne in terms of like for like quality. Based on the same three grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, the majority of English sparklers are made using the traditional method although there are a few good exceptions, like Chapel Down’s Sparkling Bacchus, that’s made by the carbonation method.
As far as the traditional method English sparklers go, we’re proud to carry Chapel Down’s award-winning Brut NV and Rosé Brut as well as Three Choirs Classic Cuvée, cleverly crafted from our native Seyval Blanc and Phoenix as well as Pinot Noir. Our range is topped off with the brilliant Sixteen Ridges Sparkling Pinot Noir Rosé, full of zingy freshness and red berry fruit intensity.
Despite a few recent setbacks with a catastrophic harvest in 2021 and the continuing glass shortage, champagne sales remain strong. We stock all the major houses; Bollinger, Lanson, Laurent Perrier, Möet and Veuve Clicquot as well as high quality and illustrious houses like Ayala, Billecart, Pol Roger, Ruinart and Taittinger.
For those looking to get away from the Grande Marques, we support smaller family houses like Gremillet, Mandois, Pierre Mignon and Telmont. The Mandois champagnes are the most recent addition to the range and are seriously good. Based in the Côte des Blancs, this historic family house uses large oak demi-muids to mature their best wines, adding breadth and complexity.
